Annual TV trends
Each year the good people at Nielsen TAM publish a report into the trends shaping New Zealand’s television industry.
2010 – Increased viewing across all age groups
- More people than ever are watching television – an average of 2.95 million people tuned in everyday
- People are watching for longer - Average daily time spent viewing was 202 minutes
- All the key age groups are showing growth
- Peak/Off-Peak parity holds - 50% of the average daily time spent viewing is happening in off-peak time zones
- Over 60% of viewing is now through a digital platform (i.e. FreeView, Sky or TelstraClear)
2009 – Increase viewing during the recession
- Television continues to be the key way to reach people – the total number of viewers reached in an average day has increased in 2009 by 2.2% year on year
- For All People 5+ Peak viewing was up 1.8% in 2009 compared to previous year and up 4.4% across the entire day.
- Total viewing across the day has reached a new high and shows a fundamental shift in viewing behaviour with more viewing in Off Peak time.
- For All People 5+ average time spent viewing was up to 3.17 hrs in 2009 from 3.08 hrs in 2008.
